Gaudí and cement

Perfect harmony between nature and architecture

In 1901, the patron Eusebi Güell founded Catalonia's first Portland cement factory in the Clot del Moro area of Castellar de n'Hug, popularly known as Asland and now home to the Museu del Ciment. This spectacular industrial complex is a stepped architectural gem, remarkably integrated into its natural surroundings and designed by Rafael Guastavino, with its distinctive Catalan vaults. Declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN), the museum offers visitors the opportunity to discover the cement manufacturing process that helped build 20th-century Catalonia. In addition, Güell commissioned Antoni Gaudí to design the Xalet del Catllaràs to house the engineers working at the coal mines that supplied the factory with this mineral.

During his stay in the Vall de Lillet to oversee this project, Gaudí stayed with the Artigas family, owners of one of the most prosperous textile factories of the time. In gratitude for their hospitality, in 1903 the architect gifted them the design of the Jardins Artigas, on a plot of land located directly opposite their home. A magical space where architecture and nature blend in perfect harmony: a beautiful corner of the region where fountains, benches, railings and bridges crossing the Llobregat River, surrounded by lush vegetation, accompany you as you stroll through the gardens.

Connecting the valley required the construction of the Tren del Ciment, originally created to transport materials and cement from the Asland factory. Today, this historic railway, converted into a tourist train, connects La Pobla de Lillet with Castellar de n'Hug, directly linking the Jardins Artigas with the Museu del Ciment. The journey takes around 20 minutes and is made in a diesel locomotive pulling four vintage carriages, each with a capacity of 25 passengers. Running parallel to the river, the route allows visitors to enjoy the landscape in a comfortable and evocative way, bringing together industrial heritage and Gaudí's genius in a single journey.
