Cement Museum

The former Asland cement factory, located in the Clot del Moro area, in the municipality of Castellar de n’Hug, operated from 1904 to 1975. The factory supplied cement at a time of strong growth in industrial society, which needed both new infrastructure and housing, as well as new production spaces. The remains that can still be seen today reveal the spectacular nature of one of the most remarkable Modernist industrial complexes of Catalan industrialisation, set in a privileged natural environment.

Today, the complex is part of the Museu Nacional de la Ciència i la Tècnica de Catalunya (MNACTEC) and houses the Museu del Ciment de Castellar de n’Hug, opened in 2002. The factory and its surroundings were declared a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional, in the category of historic monument, in 2005.

A visit to the museum provides an insight into the impressive remains of this industrial complex, built by a group of industrialists at the beginning of the 20th century. The buildings of the antiga fàbrica house different exhibition spaces.

In addition, the Museu del Ciment extends beyond the walls of the building itself to explain the entire infraestructura built at the beginning of the century to supply the factory with the energy resources and raw materials needed to produce cement. It also includes other museum spaces, such as the Colònia Asland, where cultural, industrial and natural heritage come together.
